Interstellar Medium In And Around The Milky Way, Mopra

Scientific paper

We propose to search for the molecular anions C4H-, C6H-, C8H- and their parent-neutral hydrocarbons C4H, C6H and C8H in the dense protostellar molecular cloud Cha-MMS1 and the carbon-rich AGB star IRAS 15194-5115. Both sources are known to contain abundant carbon-chain-bearing molecules. Hydrocarbon anions have recently been identified as astrophysically important species in a variety of environments but their chemistry is still poorly understood. The measurement of anion abundances in new sources will provide new information on their reaction rates for use in astrochemical models. The detection and measurement of additional carbon-chain species in these sources will provide important insights into the hydrocarbon chemistry occurring, which is crucial to the understanding of these two highly distinct types of environment.
