A Fabry-Perot spectrometer with a diameter of 15 cm has been used to obtain scans of 5007-A forbidden O III emission in 13 directions within a region centered on the Tycho supernova remnant. The results indicate that the Tycho supernova has not produced a detectable 'fossil Stromgren sphere'. The limits derived for the forbidden O III intensity suggest that the Tycho supernova could not have released into the surrounding interstellar medium more than about 1.5 by 10 to the 49th power erg in a burst of primarily soft UV radiation (He II L-alpha at 40.8 eV). It is concluded that a large flux (10 to the 51st or 52nd power erg) of such radiation could have been emitted only if most of the total radiation has photon energies greater than 55 eV, the ionization energy for O III.
