The scattering of light by a cloud of large irregular particles with random orientations is analyzed to investigate the scattering properties of interplanetary dust particles. The intensity and polarization of the scattered light are computed in the case where the particles are characterized by large-scale surface roughness. A comparison of the results obtained with recent Helios measurements of the zodiacal light shows that large particles consisting of low-absorption material and having very rough and irregular surfaces can satisfactorily reproduce the empirical scattering functions of interplanetary dust particles that contribute to the zodiacal light.
