The Advanced Technology Solar Telescope (ATST) will be the world's largest solar telescope and will provide solar physicists with an increase in available photons. The large field of view coupled with multiple, high-speed cameras allows simultaneous data collection across a variety of wavelengths and polarizations.
The large volumes of data that can be produced by each science camera, coupled with the multiple-camera use in a laboratory setting imposes unique constraints on the data handling system. The data handling system is further constrained by the relatively low performance of the off-summit data link.
This paper introduces a highly scalable, high-performance data handling system designed to satisfy the constraints imposed on ATST. Emphasis is on the on-summit data processing pipeline structure where separate camera lines are used to isolate individual data flows. This reduces the number of performance bottlenecks and allows for the easy introduction of additional science cameras during operations. The data-flows are stream-based to keep performance commensurate with camera readouts while reducing disk storage requirements. Data is moved to disk only where requirements dictate doing so.
