We are building a sample of lobe-dominated quasars with \MgII\ absorption systems for study in redshifted \HI. In these quasars the different line of sight between the optical and radio allows direct measurement of the linear size of the absorbers on scales of a few kpc and larger. Unfortunately, the detection of 21 cm absorption in \MgII\ selected absorption systems is rare (about 1 in 9) and the radio morphology and optical selection criteria defining the sample are quite restrictive. Thus to obtain a sizeable number of objects for 21 cm study, we have performed an extensive literature search and we have obtained new VLA observations at 1.5 and 5 GHz for 14 quasars and new or extended optical spectra for 33 quasars. Our method for selecting the 21 cm sample is discussed and the newly identified metal-line absorption systems are presented and their statistics compared to currently known statistics.
