Simultaneous measurements carried out using the Scandinavian And French Auroral Radar Investigation (SAFARI) coherent radars and the EISCAT incoherent scatter detectors were compared in order to study the relationship between the velocity of small-scale irregularities in the F-region and ion drift. The radars were located at Lycksele, Sweden and Oulu, Finland and operated at a pulse repetition frequency in the range 20-1000 Hz. The phase velocity of the irregularities was deduced from the computed Doppler spectra, and the results were compared to plasma drift velocity obtained from simultaneous observations of the same region of the ionosphere. Approximately equal ion drifts were found for both sets of data. The use of HF radars to measure plasma convection at very high latitudes is also discussed.
