Based on all available ROSAT and ASCA data on a small sample of six nearby edge-on starburst galaxies, we are investigating the presence and properties of hot gas in outflow cones associated with galactic superwinds. Emission perpendicular to the disks of NGC 253, NGC 3034, NGC 3079, and NGC 3628 has been found. Spatially resolved spectroscopy reveals the presence of soft (kT ~ 0.2 to 0.4 keV) emission in the halos of all these galaxies. There is evidence for a decrease in the temperature of this soft component with increasing radius in the halo of NGC 3034. In addition, we observe emission of a second gas component in NGC 3034 and NGC 253 at kT ~ 0.8 keV. In NGC 4666 we have a marginal detection of halo gas. No evidence for extraplanar hot gas is found in NGC 55.
