A method for excluding spurious optical pairs of galaxies is proposed
and applied. The mass/luminosity ratio is estimated from the motion of
the two components according to a formula which holds for an arbitrary
distribution of orbital eccentricities. No support is found for the
missing-mass hypothesis.
