It is shown that a central gravitational field can equally well be described by Newtonian theory as by general relativity theory. It is only necessary to modify Newtonian theory to satisfy the demands of special relativity and so recognize the finiteness of the velocity of light. When this is done, the theory yields the Schwarzschild metric and satisfies the three original critical tests of general relativity. The question of the reconciliation of the two radically different interpretations of the physical nature of gravitation is discussed.
