Solar Protons: Predictions, Solar Protons: Solar Flares
Scientific paper
The prediction of flares of solar proton events is briefly reviewed, with emphasis on the prediction factors and prediction levels. Conclusions obtained are (1) that major advances in this kind of prediction had been made in the 1960s and 1970s, (2) that the problems the forecasters are now facing are search for new prediction methods and the propagation process of proton beams in the solar corona and interplanetary medium, and (3) that a new classification of solar active regions from the point of view of space weather prediction seems to be very much needed.
