Literature data on the compositions of kimberlites, lamproites, and lamprophyres are reviewed with respect to the information these results yield on the mantle origin of these rock types. These results are combined with data obtained from melting experiments on peridotite in the presence of H2O and mixed H2O + CO2 volatile species. It is shown that the origin of most lamproites can be explained by the melting of mica-harzburgite assemblages at depths ranging from 40 km to more than 150 km. The determination of the origins of kimberlites and of various lamprophyre types requires more data on the melt compositions of a variety of possible mantle mineral assemblages.
