The first IAU Colloquium dedicated to "The Contribution of Amateur Astronomers to Astronomy," held in Paris, France between June 20 and 24, 1987, in celebration of the 100th Anniversary of the Societe Astronomique de France, Variable Star Day, held in Leiden, the Netherlands, on June 27, 1987, and the July Meeting of the British Astronomical Association, held in London, England, on July 1, 1987, are described.
