The solar outburst of 1986 February was remarkable for the wide variety
of auroral and other geomagnetic events that it generated so close to
sunspot minimum. The outstanding aurora of 1986 February 08/09 was
probably caused by turbulent high- speed streams behind two merging
interplanetary shock waves.
