Holstein's (1947) definition of the photon-escape transmission factor T(s) for a homogeneous-gas spectrum line, an important plasma-spectrometry and astrophysics parameter, is reviewed. It is pointed out that T(s) is the derivative with respect to path length of the equivalent width or the total absorption of the spectrum line. Independent sets of series expansions and asymptotic formulae are derived for each of these parameters, which are shown to be simply related.
