The paper considers the idealized problem of the acceleration of particles by a strong plane shock wave which propagates in a medium containing a small-scale magnetic field irregularity that scatters the particles. A mathematical treatment is developed, and a model for the mechanism of acceleration is described. The study is pertinent to the investigation of the acceleration of galactic cosmic rays.
