Orbit Determination: Artificial Satellites

The problem of determination of the initial orbit using short-arc observations is investigated from the view point of optimal estimation. Besides, a new least square algorithm and a new reference vector algorithm, which is applicable to engineering, are presented. The simulated results presented in the paper show that the reference vector algorithm can eliminate the influence of the ill-condition, which decreases the accuracy of the known initial orbit algorithm, and that it can raise the accuracy to nearly optimal level.
