The RATAN 600 radio-telescope, which is part of the Special Astrophysical Observatory constructed by the USSR Academy of Sciences in the Caucasus, is discussed. The RATAN 600 is a modified Kraus ground collector with a circumference of about 2 km, designed to receive radio waves in the 8 mm to 30 cm range. The telescope is alt-azimuth mounted with an adjustable reflector profile. The system is limited only by geodesical alignment and the stability of the ground. The complete instrument should be operational by 1977, and is expected to be used for a long-term CETI search and for communication with deep spacecraft when all sectors are completed.
