Surface features of Phobos as revealed by Viking imagery are described, together with a proposed imaging probe which would determine if Phobos has a layered structure. Phobos is shaped roughly like an ellipsoid of revolution with 27 x 22 x 17 km dimensions, and has an approximate age of 4.5 billion years. Three types of grooves have been detected on the Phobos surface, caused by impact and/or an interior layered structure. It is noted that a probe carrying a magnetometer could detect natural remanent magnetization of Phobos rocks and could map the field, thereby gaining data that could define the origin of the object, particularly if the Phobos was at one time part of a protoplanet. Also, seismographic readings made with two impact probes could support or deny a layered structure for the moon.
