The most recent outburst of the BL Lacertae object AO 0235 + 164 built up rapidly and reached a level comparable to the brightest recorded for this source. In early 1979 the object brightened by 3 mag in only one month, with variability of over 50% detected on time scales of 1-2 days. Color changes during the outburst are reported, indicating that fluctuations in the optical energy distribution occurred during the flare. Similarities between this event and the 1975 flare of AO 0235 + 164 are discussed, including the possibility of a correlated optical-radio outburst.
