Radio continuum maps of 26 Abell clusters of galaxies obtained with the 100-m Effelsberg telescope at λ11.1 cm (HPBW = 4'.4) are presented. Most of the maps cover the full Abell radius (Δ 3 Mpc at H0 = 50 km s-1 Mpc-1) of the clusters and contain linear polarization information. Selected cluster areas have also been mapped at a higher frequency and angnlar resolution: six fields at λ6.3 cm (HPBW = 2'.5) and fourteen fields at λ2.8 cm (HPBW = 1'.2). Radio data for 175 individual sources are listed and radio spectra for 141 of them have been obtained using literature data. Only very few of these show spectral steepening at high frequencies. This also holds for the local spectra of those radio galaxy tails which could be resolved with the Effelsberg antenna beam. Instead, the tail spectra steepen only with distance down the tail. Except for some indication in A665 and A2152 no more examples of radio halo sources were found at 2.7 GHz. Optical identifications for 35 of the detected sources are proposed on the basis of overlays with Palomar or ESO sky surveys. The IRAS point source catalogne has been searched for galaxy counterparts on the overlays and a total of 27 IRAS galaxies were found, of which 8 are new identifications. A statistical analysis of the entire survey data shows that for sources selected at 2.7 GHz the correlation between spectral index and projected cluster centre distance is weaker than for low frequency source samples. A strong trend for the spectra to steepen with decreasing flux density is evident. A large fraction of the empty field sources are found to have steep radio spectra and might constitute a relic population of cluster sources.
