The detection of the recombination lines H41-alpha, H31-alpha, H30-alpha, and H29-alpha toward MWC349 is reported. It is found that the 3.3-mm H41-alpha line has a Gaussian profile, that the 1-mm H31-alpha, H30-alpha, and H29-alpha lines have double-peaked profiles, and that the 1-mm lines are at least a factor of 50 stronger that the 3.3-mm line. It is suggested that the H41-alpha line can be explained by LTE emission in an isothermal stellar wind with an electron temperature of 600 K and a constant expansion velocity of about 50 km/s, and that the anomalous radio recombination lines near 1 mm are due to an amplifying maser with an optical depth smaller than -1.
