Spectra of the short-period contact system V523 Cas have been obtained beginning in August 1981. The spectral type of the system is about K5. Velocities of the two components were obtained by cross correlating the spectra of V523 Cas with those of velocity standards of similar spectral type. A mass ratio of 0.42±0.02 and velocity semiamplitudes of 96±5 and 231±4 km s-1 were derived, neglecting tidal and eclipse effects. Ca II H and K emission was observed in the system. It is associated with the more massive component.
