We propose to perform a 100 ks observation of NGC 4559 with XMM-Newton in order to unambiguously establish if intrinsic variability is present in the power density spectrum of the ultraluminous X-ray source NGC 4559 X-7. The discovery of a QPO or a break would provide for the first time for this ULX a characteristic frequency of variability and would allow us to obtain an independent estimate of the BH mass. A 100 ks observation would allow us also to obtain a spectrum with unprecedented counting statistics that will prove if this ULX contains a cool, optically thick corona. A similar analyis will be performed also on the other bright ULX hosted in NGC 4559 (source X-10).
