The mechanism governing the transport of ozone by planetary waves in the winter stratosphere is considered on the basis of the quasi-one-dimensional model developed by Hartmann and Garcia (1969), where the meridional distribution of physical quantities is expressed by two modes. Consideration is given to wave-mean flow interactions as well as to dynamic and photochemical effects on the variation in ozone content. It is found that the meridional and vertical transport of ozone caused by waves depends on the vertical structures in their orientation and magnitude.
