A quantitative model for the evolution of radio galaxies is presented. The basic assumption is that radio lobes are produced by supermassive compact objects ejected from the center of the parent galaxy by the so-called slingshot mechanism, and that the ambient medium is in a nonstationary state described by galactic wind models. Numerical calculations give the evolutionary tracks of radio sources, including total radiated power, morphology and size as functions of time. Comparison with radio galaxy samples indicates that the model describes radio galaxy evolution better than previous models. In particular, the maximum in total power around 200 kpc linear sizes, and the dearth of large, high-powered sources, are correctly predicted. The expected distribution of linear sizes in a volume-limited sample is calculated, and found to agree with observations.
