The results of a ground-based Hα imaging survey, aiming at the detection of extraplanar diffuse ionized gas in galaxies are presented. The survey consists of 74 nearby edge-on spiral galaxies. From the studied galaxies 40.5% show extended emission in the halo on typical scales of 1-2 kpc above the galactic plane. Individual filaments of a few galaxies even reach out to 6 kpc. 59.5% do not show any extended emission at the level of the reached sensitivities. From the detailed analysis, it is concluded that extraplanar diffuse emission due to galactic outflows does occur at SFR per unit area larger than (3.2+/-0.5)*10E+40 erg/s/kpc^2. There is a good correlation observed between the SFR per unit area, and the FIR flux ratio at 60 micron and 100 micron. This trend is valid for starburst galaxies, as well as for normal galaxies. SF-driven outflows are detected for lower SFR per unit area, however, only for galaxies with a significantly enhanced S60/S100 ratio. Extraplanar dust is also detected in many galaxies, and in 89% of the galaxies a correlation between the presence of extraplanar diffuse ionized gas and dust is found, though no spatial 1:1 correlation is observed. In addition to the ground-based data, a high spatial resolution investigation of the diffuse ionized gas in the disk-halo interface of the nearby edge-on spiral galaxy NGC 891 using HST/WFPC2 is presented. The morphology of the diffuse emission on spatial scales down to 4.6 pc is studied and compared with structures predicted by theoretical models.
