Some methods of averting the collision of asteroids with the Earth, using spaceflight to the asteroid and a controlled change in its orbit, are investigated: direct mechanical action on the asteroid by the impact of the spacecraft and imparting a velocity impulse to the asteroid; action with a high-thrust engine placed on the asteroid's surface; action with low-thrust electrojet engines; changing the orbit using a solar sail; painting the asteroid's surface. The characteristics of the control of an asteroid's motion by these methods are given. Numerical estimates are given for the asteroid Toutatis, which passed near the Earth in December 1992. On the basis of an approximate comparative analysis of the indicated methods, the method of direct impact is chosen for further detailed investigation.
