Optical and infrared photometry on the Johnson-Cousins system was collected from the literature for about 1500 disk and halo dwarfs and giants of known metal abundance. The color-color diagrams were used to calibrate a relative bolometric correction scale. Color-effective temperature relations were critically chosen, based on V--K for cool stars, B--V for hot stars. As soon as the refereed version of this work is completed, color tables, a FORTRAN subroutine for interpolation, several authors' isochrones, and population synthesis models will be available electronically (http://www.astro.lsa.umich.edu/users/worthey). The U--B, V--K diagram gives [Fe/H] good to an accuracy of 5 times the U--B mag error in dex, so that U--B colors good to 0.02 mag give 0.1 dex accurate metallicities. Unlike the traditional U--B, B--V metallicity indicator (which is somewhat less accurate: 7 times the U--B error instead of 5) the V--K method can also be used for giants bluer than about V--K = 2.2 without regard to giant/dwarf status. Stars redder than V--K = 3.5 are cleanly separated by U--B into dwarf and giant sequences. Using V--I instead of V--K gives results almost as good.
