The overall structure of the HH1-HH2 region is characterized on the basis of published observational data, and a theoretical model explaining the structure of HH2 is proposed. The distribution of the brightest emission knots of HH2 along a thin sinusous ribbon of enhanced reflection emission which can be tentatively traced back to a bright jetlike structure at the apex of the NW reflection nebula is found to suggest a model in which HH2 comprises bow shocks from the impact of a cold jet filament on several strands of molecular gas. The observed features of the jet are discussed in detail, and the HH2 shock signature is shown to be more consistent with a single filamentary bullet than with the set of individual bullets proposed by Hartmann and Raymond (1984) and Bohm and Solf (1985).
