Progress of the design study carried out at the Instituto de Astrophysica de Canarias and Royal Greenwich Observatory joint project office on an 8-m aperture optical/infrared telescope is reviewed. This includes the development of an active pneumatic support system for both the radial and axial supports of an 8-m-diameter thin meniscus mirror and the investigations of new-technology encoding systems.
