Block adjustment involves the simultaneous adjustment of an entire set of plates which can overlap each other in an arbitrary manner. The unknowns which have to be adjusted include all stellar positions and all free plate parameters. The practical implementation of the block adjustment procedure requires the use of a large computer. The great number of unknowns (order of magnitude: 100,000) makes it necessary to employ special storage methods. A description is presented of a comprehensive computer program which has been developed for the conduction of block adjustment calculations. The program is of universal applicability. The first results obtained with the program are data concerning the accuracy of stellar positions computed in a block adjustment calculation which was reported by von der Heide (1977). The described program is suited for an employment in the case of block adjustments involving at least 2000 plates. The entire program, in machine-language form, consists of about 400,000 machine instructions.
