Hydrogen line profiles observed in solar flares are analyzed on the basis of a systematic theory in which all significant noise effects are incorporated in analytic form. The results obtained provide direct confirmation of the hypothesis of turbulent flare plasma, which is the basis for most theoretical flare models. Quantitative analysis of several flares indicates strong low-frequency turbulence that develops to a level of the order of 0.1.
