Evidence for supersonic turbulence in the upper atmosphere of Jupiter was recently observed in Ly-alpha profiles measured in the Jovian Ly-alpha "bulge" by the Goddard High Resolution Spectrometer (GHRS). Some velocities being larger than the Jupiter's escape velocity, we deduced an atomic hydrogen escape rate of about 10(29) atoms/s. The same process should also produce an escape of molecular hydrogen, which is the main species at the relevant altitudes. The corresponding H2 escape rate will be estimated and discussed. These escape rates will finally be compared to other sources of magnetospheric plasma.
