An approach is presented for utilizing commercial software packages in the implementation of a low cost launch control system. First, a discussion of high-level launch control requirements and their inherent conflicts is provided, among which are high levels of automation, flexibility to handle changing operational procedures, real-time and/or deterministic timing requirements, and lowering of development and maintenance costs. Examples of these requirements will be drawn from existing launch control systems or systems currently under development. This discussion is followed by a mitigation technique advocating the use of a scripting or procedural language layer to capture the operational procedures. Next, a decomposition and mapping of requirements into 3 functional segments is presented. The basic functions and requirements for each segment will be described. Finally, an example of an implementation using COTS products for each of these subsystems will be described.
