This paper gives a general overview of different types of atomic calculations with an emphasis on how the methods work. The focus will be on the methods that are mostly used to generate data for plasma physics. The topics will be limited to atomic structure and electron scattering processes. Several important topics (in particular photo-ionization and ion-atom and ion molecule scattering) will not be reviewed. The main methods include mean field approximation, perturbation theory, and configuration interaction/close coupling. This paper gives a general picture of how the different methods work and describes the strengths and limitations of the different methods.
