The detection of a transient event during measurements of the light curve of AM CVn in March 1981 is described. The curve was similar to that described by Patterson et al. (1979), but on one occasion there was an apparent flare, which is shown. The current consensus is that AM CVn is a close binary system comprising a white dwarf surrounded by an accretion disk onto which a degenerate He secondary is irregularly pouring material through the inner Lagrangian point. A flare following the usual postulated mechanism and originating deep within the He star seems most unlikely in the absence of significant amounts of hydrogen in its constitution. The least unlikely explanation would be in the sudden brightening of the hotspot on the accretion disk, following an irregular and presumably rare deposition of material from the secondary.
