A mechanism is proposed for recurrent activity in a compact (R approximately 0.1-10 pc) star cluster whose members are undergoing contact collisions. If the cluster has low angular momentum, cooling and contraction of the gas released through the collisions could be responsible for the recurrent activity observed in the nuclei of galaxies; bursts of activity would repeat at intervals of 100-100,000 yr.
