An envelope ionization mechanism involving Si IV is suggested as a possible source of pulsational driving in the rapidly oscillating Ap stars. It provides natural explanations for pulsational instability in a stellar atmosphere whose He II ionization zone has been depleted by diffusion, the observed location of the rapid oscillators in the H-R diagram, and the cause of the 'oblique pulsator' geometry proposed for these stars by Kurtz (1982).
