We investigate a scenario in which scattering in resonance lines is dynamically important in accelerating the dense, low--temperature clouds which give rise to the broad absorption lines in QSOs. In order to have a high enough density and a low enough temperature, the clouds must be pressure confined. This pressure confinement is assumed to arise from energy input associated with the central source. If, as expected, the clouds are coupled to the confining medium, a strong line--driven acceleration causes the pressure in the confining region to drop. Since the clouds are in pressure equilibrium, the pressure drop increases the ionization parameter of the clouds and thereby lowers the effective opacity of the combined resonance lines. The lower opacity decreases the acceleration due to lines. Hence, a feedback mechanism may operate.
