A theoretical explanation is presented for the observed frequency-energy power law relation for UV Cet type stars. A physical similarity is assumed to exist between flares on red dwarf stars and those on the sun. The energy source of these flares is a magnetic field carried out into the upper layers of the star by convective motions. An evolutionary variation of the power index with star age reflecting a change in the nature of convection during evolution is predicted as well as the presence of a break in the frequency spectrum in the region of low energy flares.
