Results are presented from a study of variability in the "underlying" profiles of some lines in P Cygni's optical spectrum, based on 58 high-resolution spectra taken over ˜3 yr, from 1981 to 1983. Clear variations in the emission and absorption intensity, as well as in the central absorption velocity of the profiles are observed. The variations are more pronounced in the stronger than in the weaker lines. The different ions respond in a similar way. The variations in the emission and absorption intensity of the lines appear to be correlated. There seems to be no obvious correlation between the intensity and the velocity variations in the "underlying" profiles. The velocity variability of the "underlying" profiles appears to be correlated with the appearance and the velocity evolution of the corresponding discrete components.
An attempt is made for a qualitative interpretation of the obtained results.
