Scientific paper

Thermal and dynamic characteristics are considered for a proposed neon atmosphere on Pluto. Calculations are made to obtain the atmospheric cooling time, the propagation time for acoustic waves on a global scale, the period of revolution around the sun, the inclination of the orbital plane, the daily temperature variation, the minimum surface temperature, and upper limits on the atmospheric content of molecular nitrogen, argon, and methane. It is shown that the pressure on the planet should not be greater than several tenths of an atmosphere and that even a very tenuous atmosphere may substantially influence the temperature distribution.
