The authors report a possible coherent 885 Hz optical periodicity in GX 339-4. The feature had a probability of ≡2×10-4 of being produced accidentally in the observing run. If confirmed, GX 339-4 would contain the fastest pulsar yet discovered. Such a fast rotation rate would place constraints on the mass of the neutron star in GX 339-4 and on the equation of state of matter at nuclear densities.
