The plans for extending the current fundamental reference system of positions and proper motions (FK4) to fainter stars have prompted the establishment of a data bank containing about 190,000 meridian circle observations of nearly 50,000 stars, and the implementation of a retrieval system. The observational history of these stars is examined as well as their distribution in right ascension and declination, in magnitude and spectral type. This makes it possible to sort out a subset, satisfying to a first approximation the criteria for selection of supplementary stars. The subset is indicative of a short list of about 12,000 stars, forming an upper limit of potential candidates for system extension.
