A gauge theory of gravity is developed analytically on the basis of the principal fiber bundle over a space-time having as its structure group the covering group of the proper orthochronous Poincare group. The standard geometric formulation of Yang-Mills theories is followed, and the implications of the structure group and its associated Higgs-type field are considered in detail. It is shown that internal translational invariance leads to an energy momentum conservation law and the possible existence of matter fields with 'intrinsic' energy momentum.
