Lunar Topography, Lunar Craters: Schickard

Scientific paper

Using a microfilm frame of Orbiter IV HR160/2, made available by R. Moseley and B. FitzGerald and designated IV HR160/2A, a number of photo- mosaics of the floor features in Schickard have been constructed. These have been completed by employing low polar photomicrography with a Nikon microscope, to prepare 35mm colour transparencies, each covering a field area of c. 39 x 26km. Overlapping colour prints, derived from each of the 35mm transparencies, have been used with careful positioning to construct the mosaics. Similar mosaics had been made earlier from the original copy of microfilm IV HR160/2 in the possession of the writer, but the IV HR160/2A copy gives superior contrast. The accompanying photo-mosaic of the complete south-eastern dark floor area in Schickard from IV HR160/2A illustrates the improved contrast obtained (see Figure 1). It tends to confirm also the low viscosity basaltic lava flooding of the region.
