The period variation of a W-type contact binary AM Leo is studied. It was shown that the orbital period of the system oscillates with a period of about 33 yr and an amplitude of about 0.008 day, and the secondary minima occur always slightly earlier than expected. The latter point is explained in terms of a large persistent dark region on the leading hemisphere close to the neck region of the cooler primary component. The period oscillation is critically studied in terms of the mass transfer, third body, magnetic activity, and internal motions. It is shown that the period oscillation cannot be explained in terms of the magnetic activity effect. The most likely explanation of the period oscillation is the light time effect. A preliminary solution reveals that the hypothetical third body is about 8 m fainter than AM Leo, and has a very small mass of about 0.1 solar mass.
