A stellar-like object with a B magnitude of 16.3 has been discovered near a spiral arm of the galaxy M31. It was equally bright in a red band centered at 6725 A. Eight days later it was still bright in H-alpha but much fainter (m approximately 20) in a wide band centered at 5500 A. The B luminosity dropped by about 4 mag in a month. The object was not present on blue photographs of M31 taken during the past 10 yr. The photometric data and a spectrum obtained with the 200-inch SIT spectrograph after its decline suggest an anomalous novalike object.
