A numerical comparison between methods of correction to "spherical" geopotential harmonic coefficients recovered on a surface, that more resemble an ellipsoid than a sphere, using a known simple earth model shows that a modified Cruz (1986) correction closely followed by Jekeli's (1988) transformation from ellipsoidal harmonics to spherical harmonics best resolves the correct known geopotential coefficients. Although the study was made for the disturbing potential, the same result (with some reservations) should apply to the gravity anomaly.
