For the direct detection of extra-solar planets to become as successful as other detection methods, such as radial velocity, several key issues still need addressing, particularly the noise suppression of scattered starlight. This is achievable through the use of innovative new instruments, however analysis of the resultant data requires the concurrent development of novel processing techniques, specifically designed to take advantage of the spectral dimension contained within the data. Presented here is one such technique, that has been written specifically for the data gathered from the Project 1640 instrument, an apodised pupil lyot coronagraph with inbuilt integral field unit, although the underlying principles behind the pipeline are equally applicable to other future instruments of similar design.
